Bass are different from any other fish to me. They are hard to catch! Oddly enough I caught two 10 pounders my first month 2 years ago. I didn’t really know what I had done then. We live on a large lake here in Tallahassee, Lake Jackson. We look at people bass fishing everyday. Some days I wish we could just run out to the lake and start fishing. We have to get a floating dock (the lake fluctuates often) and a trolling motor to really be in business for this lake. We also have that thing called life to live and a toddler at home! She loves the boat, but it is hard to man a pole and watch for the baby to go overboard at the same time!
Yesterday, I am so mean and made my husband go to church first. (We missed our chance to go early morning on Saturday, his fault, long story.) After church we went and got shiners from Charlie’s Tuna. I like that guy. He is funny. Bait & Tackle stores aren’t pretentious. I like that because I am not good enough to be pretentious yet. I will let you know when I am! Haha. Travis is very good about just going to catch fish. That’s the point right? I have just started really trying to use artificial. I know, I can’t win a tournament with shiners, but I can catch fish! Here in North Florida our weather has been crazy! We have had 2 different seasons in one day. Seriously. The fish are hard to find. We came from church so we didn’t have our cooler. Charlie gave us a cooler with no lid. Travis thought it was funny to have me sit in the back to “protect the shiners.” Really all that happened was I got wet and it smelled like fish. They were scared of me. Feeling was mutual.
It was slow going on the water. The sun was up high and there was little cloud cover, but that meant it was nice and warm! Time to tan! Yay! I prefer fishing when I can tan! There was someone shooting on the lake, duck season is over. It was very annoying. I called Florida Fish and Wildlife, yea I am that person. Guess what? There is a snipe season! Who knew? I wish a snipe was that equally annoying bird around us. we also saw some friends on the lake. Which is fun.
If you are like me and working on your attention span, I suggest taking a pet fishing. Wyatt and I bound. A lot. Shiner fishing can get boring. All you do it wait. I cast some soft plastics when we it looked too tempting not to. There was a ton of movement on the lake, so we were assuming everyone was having the luck we were. I asked my friends, the confirmed as much. I took a selfie in my new hat out of boredom and because I love it! I am working on protecting my face from all the sun. People always comment on how red my nose is. That is not good.
Then We decided to try one last spot. THE spot where I caught one of my 10 pounders. We were low on gas, he forgets these crucial things sometimes, so this had to work. I cast my shiner. I looked over and told Travis I was hung up on some lily pads. Oh! No! It was a fish. Yea, he laughed. I got it close, but I hadn’t hooked it well and he swam away. A hit! A hit! That was the first all day! This was a great sign! I felt rejuvenated. I put another little feisty shiner on. I was waiting with anticipation now. Then, it happened. Down it went. I set the hook when it felt right. I had him. He fought hard! I just wanted him in the boat! I let him wear himself out and I didn’t reel too hard. I had him! Yay! I hadn’t gotten a bass in a while. I hadn’t gotten a hit, for that matter, in about a month! He wasn’t going to win lunker of the year, but it was a bass and I had caught him! It is all about the thrill of the catch!
